Description

To help us maximizing the time for practical hands-on-session in Riga, please prepare your laptop as far as you can by following the instructions provided in this book!

Do not hesitate to use the forum or to contact CM SAF Training in case of questions.

If you run into issues with admin rights during the software installation we strongly advice you to contact your local administrator well before the classroom phase! These issues cannot be solved in Riga!

1. Software installation

The CM SAF supports the use of the statistical software R for analysis and visualization of CM SAF data. This software tool is freely available for all common operating systems. We highly recommend that you already install it on your laptop prior to the classroom phase. R-scripts will be provided to import and handle CM SAF data in NetCDF format.

More information on the software supported by CM SAF as well as the CM SAF R Toolbox, can be found in the Software Tools Section. There you will get Information about the 'cmsaf' R-package, its installation and usage.

In case you prefer to use alternative software, in particular those software you are using in your daily work, you are invited to use your laptop with the approriate software. Most available software tools (e.g., Matlab, various Geographical Information Systems) provide an interface to access NetCDF data. However, detailed support on how to work with CM SAF using these software tools cannot be provided.

For a quick look on the data, an Installation of the freely available tool Panoply is recommended.

2. Getting CM SAF data

For an efficient start of the exploration of CM SAF data, it would be useful if you already bring the data you want to explore on your laptop to the workshop. The data is available through the CM SAF Web User Interface. Further information on the available data sets and products can be found on the CM SAF Homepage, in the 2012 CM SAF Overview Presentation and on the CM SAF Community Site. We strongly encourage you to download the data in NetCDF-format. We will also provide selected data at the workshop; please let us know, which EUMETSAT data you would like to use in Krakow.

During the workshop you will have time to explore the application of EUMETSAT climate data records for your research and application. Members of the CM SAF team will be around to assist you when questions / problems occur.
