I can already see one benefit of using text chatroom... I dont have to wear my headset :)

08:08 Ian:

I came an hour early as we've just changed to daylight saving. I'm OK with the local time but forgot about adjusting UTC.

08:09 Maja:

Hi Ian, I can understand the confusion...I usually use this website to convert time: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

08:10 Maja:

Do you know it?

Izolda08:10: Izolda Marcinonienė has just entered this chat
08:10 Sarah:

Good thing about being in the tropics, no need to convert time :-)

 Usama at Doha08:10 Usama:

Welcome Vesa

08:11 Ian:

I'm used to working in UTC but just forgot to adjust my local time

08:11 Larisa:

Vesa, i see another benefit - i can do another work at the same time and be in discussion too :)

08:11 Vesa:

Larissa, is it a benefit? :P

08:12 Patricia:

It's great to be part of this text chat mode of weather briefing, can't wait to see what is in store

08:12 Larisa:

for me yes, as i have urgent work and want be with all you too :)

08:12 Maja:

I guess Sarah is getting ready with her slides?

08:16 Sarah:

Yes Maja, I am getting ready with the chats

08:16 Sarah:

It's great to see Pat on here, welcome Pat

Say "Yes" more than you say "No"08:17 Patrick:

Hi Sarah. Sorry I joined the chat late. I did not review the instructions well I guess. :)

08:17 Sarah:

You are on time Pat, we are still waiting for some more people to join so that we can begin

Say "Yes" more than you say "No"08:19 Patrick:

OK. We are under mostly sunny skies here in Geneva. It has been a nice Fall so far.

Izolda08:19 Izolda:

hello, nice to see and to meet you again!

08:22 Ian:

Hi Sarah, I think we should start now and not penalise those who arrived on time.

08:22: Barbara Bourdelles has just entered this chat
08:23 Sarah:

I agree... we do have a quorum and it would be great to know each other

08:23 Sarah:

Just to introduce myself again, am Sarah from IMTR, Kenya and we are having sunny conditions today

08:23 Barbara:

Hzllo everybody.

08:23 Sarah:

Welcome barbara

08:24 Sarah:

So to start us off let's move to slide number 2 where we have the world map and just pick and place the stars that are on the side to where you currently are

08:25 Vesa:

I seem not to be able to place a start (only View mode), but please place a star in Germany :)

08:25 Maja:

OK. I am on the slide 2. I see some stars ready :)

08:26 Sarah:

its on edit mode now, let's see who will succeed :-)

08:26 Barbara:

same problem than Vesa

Izolda08:26 Izolda:

me too...

08:26 Vesa:

reloading the page helped !

08:27 Larisa:

only view mode too

08:27 Maja:

I guess we have no edit rights, I am in Versoix (Switzerland)

08:27 Larisa:

oh yes!

08:27 Ian:

Reloading worked for me too

08:27 Vesa:

Re-load the page and it will be all right

Say "Yes" more than you say "No"08:27 Patrick:

Thanks for the tip to reload the page. That worked!

08:28 Sarah:

I can see most of us are in Europe and someone in Sydney

Say "Yes" more than you say "No"08:28 Patrick:

And someone in the Canary Islands.

08:29 Sarah:

We feel honoured by their presence, maybe they can say hello?

08:30 Ian:

I'm in Melbourne, not Sydney

08:30 Patricia:

Am in Nairobi with Sarah, sunny Nairobi

08:30 Sarah:

Oh great ...

08:30 Vesa:

Usama said its sunny in Cairo ...

08:30 Chema:

Hello from Tenerife (Canary Islands).

08:31 Sarah:

So today we shall look at a few slides of near real time satellite and ECMWF products and being from Kenya I will be biased to discuss our current weather

 Usama at Doha08:31 Usama:

yes Vesa

 Usama at Doha08:32 Usama:

what should we do at stars ?

08:32 Sarah:

we shall begin with slide number 3 where we have IR 10.8 overlaid with MSLP at 12UTC yesterday

08:33 Sarah:

Usama, place a star on where you are on the map :-)

08:33 Vesa:

Usama, you can draw a star at the Google slide 2 to Cairo to practice annotation . .

 Usama at Doha08:33 Usama:

ok , it is already placed

08:35 Philip:

In Nairobi with Patricia and sarah

08:35 Sarah:

Am sure we have had a look at slide 3 where we see that on the south of Africa (St. Helena) we had strong ridging which pushed the active weather to the east

08:36: Barbara Bourdelles has left this chat
08:36 Sarah:

The ridging is on a SW-NE orientation which favored the region

08:37 Sarah:

Anyone who can comment on the SE - NW ridging?

08:39 Sarah:

Nobody? :-)

08:40: Lada Gabela Seperic has left this chat
08:40 Patricia:

I think the SE-NW ridging of the Mascarene is denying the central and Coastal parts of Kenya rainfall

08:41 Vesa:

Patricia, is it the Mascarene hign you mean ?

08:41 Sarah:

that is correct Patricia, the high pressures push the active systems further North confining the activities to the North of Kenya

08:42 Philip:

Patricia a talking of Mascarene or St. Helana

08:42 Patricia:

Yes that is the one i was refering to

08:42 Sarah:

thank you for that

08:43 Sarah:

What can we say about the North pressure systems, also consider the IR image as you analyse

08:49 Sarah:

am back: internet acting up a little bit

08:50 Sarah:

thanks for your comments

08:50 Sarah:

I have indicated the pressures with yellow stars....

08:51 Sarah:

they are both strong and this helped to maintain the active sytems over our region

08:51 Sarah:

let's compare that to slide number 4

08:53 Sarah:

Is there a difference between the 2 slides, 3 and 4? (Hint; Concetrate on the St. Helena and the Mascarene high

Izolda08:54 Izolda:

wV and IR?

08:54 Sarah:

It is still on IR 10.8

08:54 Vesa:

or different time steps?

08:54: Barbara Bourdelles has just entered this chat
08:55 Sarah:

Slide number 4 is at 18UTC and slide 3 is at 12UTC

08:55 Sarah:

another hint: look at the orientation of the Mascarene high

 Usama at Doha08:56 Usama:

convective clouds developed

08:57: Raf Windmolders has just entered this chat
Izolda08:58 Izolda:

and seems to be clouds streets due to strong wind in upper layers

08:58: Vesa Nietosvaara has left this chat
08:58 Maja:

Hi Raf, welcome, we are looking at slide 4 now

08:58 Sarah:

The region developed more convective clouds and the ridging became abit more pronoounced and intensed and pushed the active system (meridional arm of the ITCZ) further west

09:00 Sarah:

Izolda that is very correct

09:00 Sarah:

So basically we have seen how the ITCZ was by 18UTC yesterday and we have had a look at the MSLP

09:00 Sarah:

Now on slide 5 ...

09:01 Sarah:

We have the natural colour RGB overlaid with CAPe

09:02 Sarah:

I welcome comments for slide 5, this was at 12UTC yesterday

09:04 Patricia:

I see the CAPE seems to be in line with the ITCZ especially to the Nort and West of kenya

09:04 Sarah:

Correct Patricia.

Izolda09:04 Izolda:

and the highest CAPE on equator, of course

09:05: Wilfried Jacobs has just entered this chat
09:05 Sarah:

Yes Izolda. Would you say the model is line with the satellite image? Any other interesting features on slide 5?

09:06 Roro Yuliana:

Hi Wilfried, welcome to the briefing..

Izolda09:06 Izolda:

no, not too well CAPE with IR clouds image

09:06 Sarah:

Any other interesting features on slide 5?

09:07 Sarah:

Slide 6

Izolda09:09 Izolda:

and the same over Madagascar...

09:09: Vesa Nietosvaara has just entered this chat
09:10 Sarah:

09:10 Sarah:

Slide 6, yes

09:10 Sarah:

09:11 Wilfried:

Sorry I wa too late. I did not see the announcement due to other duties. Thank you for inviting, Wilfried.

Izolda09:12 Izolda:

very cold intrution from upper layersover Madagascar and strong convection there and over Southern atlantic

09:13 Sarah:

thank you Izolda...any other contribution?

09:13 Roro Yuliana:

Thats OK Wilfried, lets join the fun...your comment for the slides is welcome.

We will have more fun with airmass RGB later in the forum but now we can move to slide 7

09:16 Sarah:

These are winds over the region with the bright green signifying stong winds from the Indian ocean

09:17: Wilfried Jacobs has left this chat
09:18 Raf:

On slide 6: I suppose someone is indicating the areas with high PV (reddish colour) indicating presence of Jet Stream?

09:18 Philip:

at what level are those winds sarah

09:18 Sarah:

10 meters above the surface

09:18 Sarah:

I have circled our region

09:19 Sarah:

Philip, u want to have fun with the winds?

Izolda09:19 Izolda:

strong convergency

09:20 Sarah:

Yes, we have convergence over the lake region

Izolda09:20 Izolda:

and over Victoria lake (I hope I am right ) also stronger winds than surrounding area

09:21 Sarah:

*Claps for Izolda* You are quite right, over Lake Victoria (Lake region)

09:22 Sarah:

So lets move on to slide 8, shows today's 06UTC humidity with almost 80%RH over our region

09:23 Ian:

I'm always wary of trying to eyeball regions of convergence. There is strong diffluence but it's hard to tell if the changes in wind speed compensate or not. It would be good to see a divergence fiels or vertical velocity.

09:23 Patricia:

we see that most of the country seems to have good moisture except over the coast

09:26 Sarah:

Ian that is a very good point, we will have a look at the divergence

Divergence slide 8, currently (refresh)

09:29 Sarah:

Combining the winds and the divergence and following Ian's contribution, what can we say?

09:29 Ian:

What level is the divergence?

09:29 Sarah:

300

09:31 Vesa:

ahaa... so it should show divergence at that level where strong convefction takes place?

Izolda09:31 Izolda:

if the divergency at 300 and convergency at lower levels-very could conditions covcetion to appera

Izolda09:31 Izolda:

good conditions :)

09:31 Patricia:

The divergence slide shows areas of divergence near The lake region at 300mb level which would most likely indicate convergence at the surface

09:32 Sarah:

Awesome... Vesa, Patricia and Izolda seem to be speaking the same language

Izolda09:32 Izolda:

sorry for errrors in printing:(

09:33 Sarah:

The lake region from this we expect active weather

09:33 Ian:

It shows there is no strong synoptic scale upper level forcing (unless it shows better with a lower threshold for contours) . Is there a low level divergence available or a vertical velocity?

09:34 Sarah:

Back to slide 9, RH, we saw we had almost over 80% of humidity so again great conditions over the region

Say "Yes" more than you say "No"09:35 Patrick:

I hope that before this session is over, you will also show us a photo of what is happening outside your window. :)

09:36 Sarah:

Ian, we will look at the low level divergence too :-)

09:37 Sarah:

sure Patrick...:-)

09:38 Sarah:

Before we look at the low level divergence just have fun looking at athe animation of dust RGB, clearly shows the moisture boundar over the region

Izolda09:39 Izolda:

sorry, I have to leave the session. Thank you, Sarah

09:39 Sarah:

(Refresh) slide 9...overlay of low level divergence (red) and upper level divergence (blue)

Izolda09:40: Izolda Marcinonienė has left this chat

beautiful details .. of topography and coastlines.

09:44 Sarah:

09:48 Patricia:

i think based on all the factors we have looked at, i can asy we might have showers

09:49 Vesa:

but not on the coastal regions ?

09:49: Vesa Nietosvaara has left this chat
 Usama at Doha09:50 Usama:

at NW of Kenya

09:50 Philip:

North west of kenya we are likely to have showers in the afternoon , while a long the coast is clear skies

09:51 Sarah:

Thank you Usama and Patricia, we can expect slight showers over few places in the NW Kenya

09:51 Sarah:

Ian? :-))

09:52 Sarah:

Thanks Philip, over the coast we might have showers in the morning but as for the afternoon looking at the factors discusssed we should expect clear skies

09:54 Sarah:

Well, that brings us to the end of the live session of my weather briefing, the session will be left open for a few more hours for more discussions

09:54 Ian:

I'd like to see higher resolution but am wondering about the possibility of thunderstorms in the NW??

09:55 Ian:

Thanks for the session Sarah. Enjoy your day.

09:55 Sarah:

It would be great also to have fun with more interesting satellite and ECMWFproducts, so go to the briefing forum and post any interesting phenomena and we shall discuss it it
