  • TRAINING WITH SIMULATORS: WHAT IS THE STATE OF ART


    Are simulations a good idea for teaching forecasters? If they are, how?

    Facilitators: Mark Higgins (EUMETSAT) and Heleen ter Pelkwijk (KNMI)
    Date: 6 September - 31 October 2012

    • The aim of this workshop is to gather together what is already known from research and our own experience. We will then be able to use this knowledge in our teaching practice. We will do this over 8 weeks, a model of "little and often" participation    

      Week 1+2 look for papers, conference abstracts, reports ....

      Week 3+4 gather stories, evidence and data from our own experiences of training forecasters

      Week 5+6 make sense of this data (1) and (2) ... what do we think it means? Can we say that simulations are a good idea, does it make sense to teach decision making ...

      Week 7+8 decide what to do next ....  hopefully there may be a writing activity to put it together in a publication.

    • What is known from research: Weeks 1&2

      What papers, conference abstracts, reports are you aware of? What is the quality of those sources? What might they tell us? What are the constraints?

    • What is known from experience: Weeks 3&4

      What practical experiences / knowledge do we have, what do those experiences tell us?
