Engage in a global discussion on creating activities for learning meteorology

November 30, 2010: CALMet 2010 has concluded. We thank all participants and presenters for their efforts. Presentations and discussions are available for review below.

    - The organizing committee:

    Pat Parrish (pparrish@comet.ucar.edu)

Whether you are enrolled as a participant, or just looking in as a guest, welcome to the CALMet Online 2010 website! We hope you will find the distance learning sessions here interesting and useful in your work. While enrollment is not required, those who enroll will have the benefit of being able to contribute to discussion forums and join other online activities.

Since 1993, CALMet conferences have been a valuable resource for educators and trainers in national meteorological and hydrologic services and universities around the world. Each time our close-knit community meets, we all benefit through the sharing of ideas and techniques for creating activities for learning meteorology and related sciences. For more on CALMet, visit www.calmet.org.

In 2010, we decided to expand the reach of CALMet beyond a once-every-two-years conference by offering "CALMet Online 2010". This online offering of presentations and workshops will:

    • Provide a way to explore the use of new distance learning methods
    • Allow more flexibility for participation
    • Help us stay connected with colleagues for ongoing sharing
    • Provide a proving ground for ideas for presentations and workshops that might be offered at CALMet 2011 in Pretoria, South Africa, 3-7 October.

Session 3: Communicating and working as a virtual team

Instructor: Satu Vesanen, Vesa Nietosvaara, Anni Simola, Alessandro Chiariello (FMI)
    Session Dates:
Online session 14 September 13 UTC
    Topic:
This activity will demonstrate various aspects of communicating, motivating and engaging persons working in virtual teams. Participants will gain new perspectives on how team work can be carried out virtually.

In the beginning of activity, we will explore the meaning of "virtuality" and describe how the level of virtuality may affect on motivating and engaging persons working in a team.

We will also view the perspective of virtuality in international teams. For the international teams working online is inevitable and necessary. The vast distances, different time zones and different working cultures can be challenging for collaboration and project management. This part of the presentation will tell some FMI experiences on international virtual teamwork, and some recommendations on how to make the work more effective.

Furthermore, we are asking how does increasing virtuality affect leadership? What should a team or project lead consider or do differently as and when the amount of virtuality in teamwork increases. This part will be discussed based on a brief literature review as well as on our own experiences of virtual teamwork.
