Hello, CALMeters!

Nice to catch you again. How is your feeling so far for this online event? We believe that now you are already familiar with the site and ready for the next interesting activities.

This week, we had two live events on weather briefing. Big thanks to Sarah Kimani who has been our wonderful host, provided us with warm welcome in ice-breaker activity and gathered us together with some unique experiences  using chat as an alternative of communication amidst the challenges of low band-width, different time zones and fixed schedule. The discussion about the advantages and challenges on briefing using chat has been wrapped nicely by Sarah in her “chat pros-cons” summary. Participants who missed the live-sessions still have a chance to trace the discussion by downloading the chat summary pdf file.

Even if we have used words “chatting” and “icebreakers”, the purpose of this week session was very serious: many of us struggle with connectivity and communication issues at our work. The demonstration by Sarah shared an  idea how operational forecasters can exchange important weather and warning information in challenging environments using a low-cost and low-bandwidth solution. Ultimately this will help us improve our capabilities to serve the users and provide them better weather and warning services.

We thank for all the enthusiasm that showed in the number of activities of participants and facilitators as noted by the system. Thanks for all of you who attended the live-sessions, and those who posted comments and feed-backs in Session Forum. The contribution of participants has made the event more exciting and produced some useful recommendations for our weather briefing activities, to be implemented in our own institutions in the near future.

The briefing activities will last this week, but we keep the forum open, to make continuous contribution in the discussion become possible. As Sarah will post her experiences in this activity in the CALMet Commons, we encourage you as well to visit the website and join Sarah to share your experience about chat weather briefing. More colleagues will read and many more will learn something from our experiences. You still have time and opportunity to contribute.

Another good news is a fact that this is only the beginning, and let us continue our fun moments by welcoming the upcoming session.

So, what happens next week?

It is our pleasure, to welcome you to the Week 2, the “Learnopoly” Week. This activity will be conducted from 13 to 26 October 2014. As you see that our facilitator, Patrick Parrish from WMO posted the invitation in the Forum, together with Maja Kuna from Eumetsat, he is ready to challenge all of you with their interesting game of finding the best learning solution.

Meet them in the Facilitator Book and lets enjoy the Learnopoly game!

Regards,

Roro and Vesa
