Hello, everyone!  Good to see everyone busy discussing what differences they see between FCI and MSG.

Please reply this message and post your findings, and we will respond you with comments on your findings.

Group5 : guinea morning convection
with MTG cloud phase RGB ( compared against convection RGB, Airmass RGB and natural color RGB) :
- clouds are more structured
- we differentiate more CB and cirrus in convection situation
- the thick water clouds are visible and differentiated with their pink color
- ice clouds in blue look more natural
- the overshoots are clearer

Hi, Group 5.
Thanks for your reply.

- clouds are more structured --> INDEED, the better spatial resolution of FCI enables us to see much cloud features that are not shown by SEVIRI.

- we differentiate more CB and cirrus in convection situation: --> Good Finding.

- the thick water clouds are visible and differentiated with their pink color: --> Exactly
- ice clouds in blue look more natural: Yes they do.
- the overshoots are clearer: Very much true, and this is due to the fact of better spatial resolution of FCI, and also better differentiation of liquid and ice clouds .

For the South African region, from the FCI we get a more clear indication about cloud type, cloud phase and about the cloud microphysics. Thick ice clouds are more brighter well-defined opaque ice clouds as compared to MSG.

Thanks, South Africa group.

Good findings also. Everything that has to do with cloud microphysical properties (thickness, droplet size, phase) is better captured by FCI than by SEVIRI.

ANALYSIS OVER SOUTHERN AFRICA
The FCI shows more/well established convective clouds than the MSG(Convection RGB) where some clouds (very small particles) are being merged with land cover. The similarity is that both CB clouds are picked in yellow.

Hello, Group 2 : Somalia Convection

Comparing MTG to MSG we find that :
- The quality of Images is better in MTG than MSG and development of Convective clouds is well remarkable in MTG.
- The cloud color is different
- Interval time between two images is smaller in MTG
- The cloud structure well differentiated in MTG

par Vesa Nietosvaara,

Hello, Houssein and group 2,

well spotted! Indeed the interval of MTG is nominally better, 10 minutes compared to 15 minutes MSG.

In Africa this will apply to some priority products, while some other products will be disseminated less frequently. This is due to the bandwith limitations in the EUMETCast-Africa dissemination.

And again, cloud structures come up much better in FCI and than in SEVIRI .

Group1: guinea afternoon convection
with MTG cloud phase there are
mixed clouds appear yellow and pink inside it, with some ice clouds in the east part of guinea.
.
From natural color channel, the details of the clouds do not appear clearly nor definitively. So MTG better than MSG.

Well spotted. The CLoud Phase RGB , once learned, is very informative product and offers better differentiation of cloud types and phases than Day Natural Colour RGB.

Group 1:
1. the MSG, RGB convection colors shows the thick water clouds, larger droplets in dark red, while the think water clouds, small droplets in purple violate.
2. the FCI, convection colors shows the thick water clouds, larger droplets in dark pink, while the light yellow shows the think water clouds.
3. the images in FCI are more clearer than the one in the MSG, and its give images updates every 10 minutes.
