Satellite Direct Readout
VLab is organising a series of online sessions about direct readout capabilities of polar orbiting systems.These online sessions will be coordinated by the satellite operators that operate polar orbiting systems with a direct readout capability. Participation in these sessions is free of charge, but interested parties are requested to register in advance.

Tuesday, 07 May 2013, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (UTC) The presentation will give an overview on the EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS), which is EUMETSATs contribution to the Initial Joint Polar System (IJPS) together with the US (NOAA). A short introduction will give an overview on the system. The space segment, composed of the Metop satellites will be presented. The instruments embarked will be discussed and the products and services provided by the ground Segment will be presented. Metop-A is in orbit since October 2006, and is working fine. To assure the continuity Metop-B was launched in September 2012 and became the prime satellite on the 24 April 2013, after successful commissioning. Some aspects of the availability of two Metop satellites will be highlighted as well. Finally an outlook will conclude the presentation. |

Wednesday, 08 May 2013, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (UTC) The presentation will describe the direct broadcast capabilities of polar-orbiting weather satellites, with particular reference to Metop, and the software packages that are available to process the data. The ATOVS and AVHRR Pre-processing Package (AAPP) is one of the main tools for processing data from Metop and NOAA POES satellites; the package is maintained by the NWP Satellite Application Facility. Examples will be given of how to process the raw data to radiances (e.g. for assimilation into NWP models) or imagery. Regional re-distribution of direct broadcast data (raw and processed) has expanded greatly in recent years: the EUMETSAT Advanced Retransmission Services (EARS) are now available for several of the EPS instruments (ATOVS, AVHRR, ASCAT, IASI) and are currently being developed for Suomi-NPP. These services allow multiple users to access the direct broadcast data, over a wide geographical area, and with a timeliness suitable for NWP and nowcasting applications. The talk will describe the use of AAPP, and other packages, in the context of these EARS services. |
