  • Day 3 will focus on various ocean colour retrieval algorithms, discussing fundamental approaches, multi-spectral vs hyperspectral considerations, regional selection and optimisation (e.g. optical water typing), open ocean versus complex water considerations, the value of ancillary data sources and machine learning considerations.

    Learning objectives:

By the end of day 3 you should:

    • Understand broad approaches to retrieval of biogeophysical parameters
    • Reflect on how these intersect with sensor trade offs e.g. what do you gain with bands/spatial res, revisit, what do you lose in SNR?
    • Be able to critically consider how you expect algorithms to perform in different situations, when it might be necessary to try other approaches, or develop new ones.
    • Have assessed how various retrievals work in your ROI
    • Part 1: What influences the ocean colour signal?

    • PDF presentation from day 3 part 1 of the MSOC course. The video will follow.

    • Part 2: Algorithms and how they vary per sensor?

    • PDF presentation from day 3 part 2 of the MSOC course. The video will follow.

    • Part 3: Comparing chlorophyll and beyond…

There is no presentation for this part. Please see the msoc repository for the demonstrated Jupyter notebooks.

    • Part 4: Group data work #3: algorithm performance

There is no presentation for this part. Please see the msoc repository for the demonstrated Jupyter notebooks for this day.
