  • IOCS Multi-Sensor Ocean Colour Course

IOCS Multi-sensor Ocean Colour Course banner image

    Overview

From 1-5 December 2025, the International Ocean Colour Science meeting will return to Darmstadt, Germany for its 6th iteration. The meeting, which covers optical radiometry of all water types, brings the scientific community and space agencies together to support open communication between the two, informing future missions and driving forward science and applications.

As part of this year's programme, EUMETSAT, in partnership with the IOCCG, will offer an advanced, multi-sensor ocean colour training course. The event, held from 7-11 December, will be hosted on site at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt and will cover key aspects of satellite ocean colour, including atmospheric correction, bio-optical algorithm selection, product quality, validation and multi-sensor synergy. It will be supported by Copernicus Sentinel-3 OLCI, NASA PACE OCI and Copernicus Sentinel-2 MSI experts and be highly interactive, introducing hands-on examples throughout. Alongside training sessions, participants will have opportunities to learn more about satellite operations.

In addition to gaining skills needed to access and work with a variety of ocean colour data streams, participants should expect to leave the course with a clear understanding of the challenges we face in ocean colour and the approaches we take to addressing them.

    Intended audience

    This is an advanced level training event, designed to support those already engaged in satellite ocean colour activities. Training is aimed at, but not restricted to;

    • early and mid-career researchers who are already working with ocean colour in some capacity at the graduate or postgraduate level
    • oceanographers involved in marine monitoring activities and applications, either public or private, who are looking to expand their understanding of new sensors and approaches
    • service and application developers who are looking to exploit ocean colour data in their workflows
    • ocean colour practitioners interested in working in an operational agency context

    Learning objectives

    Participants completing this course will:

    • be able to access, download and work with single-sensor ocean colour data from multiple sensors
    • understand the advantages, consequences and limitations associated with differing approaches to atmospheric correction
    • appreciate the complexity of selecting bio-optical algorithms for ocean colour retrievals
    • know how to assess and apply product flags, determine product quality, and construct match-up validation workflows
    • be familiar with the key considerations needed for multi-sensor synergy
    • gain experience of operational satellite data production

    Applications

Applications for this course are open and will close on 15 August, 2025. You should apply via the form below. Please ensure you read the important information below before applying.

    Spaces on the course are limited. Our position is that this training event is complimentary to the IOCS meeting, and that participants would benefit from attending both. Further, we expect the advanced nature of the course to appeal to early career scientists attending the IOCS. Consequently;

    • While the course will be open to all, priority will be given to those who will also present at IOCS.
    • Please remember that you need to register separately for the IOCS meeting. This can be done via https://iocs.ioccg.org/.
    • Registration costs for the IOCS meeting will be waived for course participants that receive support funding (more information below). While you are welcome, and encouraged to, submit abstracts, please do not pay the IOCS registration fee if you are applying for the course with support funding.
    • Limited support funding for travel is available. Please indicate on the application form if you would like to request this.
    • This course is supported by the IOCCG. As such priority for travel funding will be given to those who are presenting an abstract at the IOCS meeting.
    • The course is a Copernicus funded activity. As such, priority for travel funding will also be given to those who are attending from Copernicus member states or from states with a Copernicus International Cooperation Agreement.
    • Support funding will cover flights, accommodation, a registration fee waiver for the IOCS meeting, and local subsistence for both the IOCS meeting and the multi-sensor ocean colour training course.
    • We will, of course, consider situations with extenuating circumstances.

  • Seventh Joint ECMWF/ESA/EUMETSAT Training in Atmospheric Composition 2025

The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) are organising the seventh joint training course on Atmospheric Composition.

Whilst the topics of the training cover the main processes involved in atmospheric composition monitoring and modelling, the focus this year will be more on Advanced Atmospheric Composition Products & Applications with an emphasis on aerosols.

    Dates: 13 to 17 October 2025
Location: Brussels, hosted by the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy BIRA-IASB .

    Additional key dates:

    • 29 June 2025: deadline for registrations at 24:00 CEST.
    • Mid July 2025: notification to selected participants.
    • 1-2 and 9-10 October 2025 (tentative dates): online lectures.

    Target audience
The course is targeted to post-graduate level students, researchers, professionals or anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of atmospheric composition monitoring and modelling and developing their practical skills in data handling.
Some basic background in physics, chemistry, mathematics and computing is assumed, and elementary familiarity with Python programming would be beneficial to make the most of the training.
Whilst the onsite training is limited to around 30 participants, the online lectures preceding the onsite phase will be streamed to a wider audience.

When selecting candidates for the on-site training, participants from Copernicus contributing countries and member states of ESA and EUMETSAT will be given preference. Students from all other countries are also welcome to apply, subject to availability of space.

Financial support (for accommodation in Brussels) will be available upon request for a limited number of participants. Priority will be given to candidates from Copernicus contributing countries or working on an EU project.

  • ESSL-EUMETSAT Testbeds on Severe Convective Storms 2025

ESSL and EUMETSAT organize a series of testbeds to prepare forecasters from the EUMETSAT Member States to use the data from Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) and Metop Second Generation (Metop-SG) satellites. These testbeds are organized both to teach forecasting severe convective storms, using state-of-the-art or even experimental forecasting tools, and to evaluate such tools. Forecasters will learn by making severe weather forecasts and nowcasts using a mix of new nowcasting and forecasting tools, followed by a verification. Particular focus will be given to the use of MTG satellite data and products, from both FCI and LI sensors. In addition, a range of state-of-the-art nowcasting tools and numerical weather prediction-based guidance (i.e. from DWD, ZAMG, ESSL, and ECMWF) will be evaluated.

Target group: Forecasters from the EUMETSAT Member States who train other forecasters and forecasters with a strong background in severe storms meteorology.

    Location & dates
All testbeds will take place at ESSL Research and Training Centre (Wiener Neustadt, Austria).
