  • A note on using AI / chatGPT for your application

    • Using ChatGPT or other AI tools in your application - this is ok BUT ....

      We see many people using AI tools in their application. This can help you to structure your application and use the right language. But beware! - many of these applications get rejected! 

      Make sure your application is very specific about your own personal motivation, how you will use the experience, and how your background is relevant. The AI generated applications read nicely but are usually too generic - and so we don't see the applications own motivation, needs and experiences - and so the application is rejected. 

      We suggest that if you do use AI tools in your application to make sure you add your specific motivation and needs in the prompt and make sure your motivation is clear in the final text.

      As an example: this is the kind of application that gets rejected!

      I am enthusiastically applying for the EUMETSAT training course due to my fervent commitment to advancing our understanding of ecosystems and their impact on Earth. As a professional deeply entrenched in the fields of environmental science and data analytics, I recognize the pivotal role that Earth observation plays in unraveling the complexities of our environment. This course, facilitated by EUMETSAT, renowned for its expertise in satellite meteorology, offers a unique opportunity to enhance my skills in harnessing satellite data for marine applications. The prospect of gaining proficiency in utilizing cutting-edge tools and techniques to interpret Earth observation data for marine ecosystems is particularly appealing. Moreover, EUMETSAT's commitment to fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange resonates with my belief in the collective responsibility of the global community to address pressing environmental challenges.       Lots of lovely words - but no real detail about the applicant.  So use the AI tools to write a good application if that helps you - but be specific and be you!

  • SEEMET 2025

    SEEMET is a regular yearly training initiated and organized by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of South-East Europe, and supported by EUMETSAT, Eumetcal, EUMeTrain and ECMWF. Training includes using of satellite data and products as well as ECMWF products in forecast operations. 

    SEEMET 2025 will be an advanced satellite course, with a focus on convection.

    The topics will cover: 

    1. MSG and MTG Satellite channels and RGB products
    2. Convection forecast - Ingredient based methodology
    3. Pre-convective environment - humidity, stability

    4. Synoptic scale driving mechanisms, mesoscale lift

    5. Introduction to ECMWF products for convection

    6. Convective hazards
    7. MTG Lightning imager (LI) products in convection analysis and nowcast


    The course is targeted to forecasters from the SE European (ICSEED) countries : Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Kosovo (UNSCR 1244/1999), Montenegro, Greece, Turkey, Albania, Cyprus, Moldova, Ukraine, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Since it is an advanced course, it is designed for more experienced forecasters.

    The applications to this course are based on the nominations by the heads of the NMHSs.

  • ESSL-EUMETSAT Testbeds on Severe Convective Storms 2025

    ESSL and EUMETSAT organize a series of testbeds to prepare forecasters from the EUMETSAT Member States to use the data from Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) and Metop Second Generation (Metop-SG) satellites. These testbeds are organized both to teach forecasting severe convective storms, using state-of-the-art or even experimental forecasting tools, and to evaluate such tools. Forecasters will learn by making severe weather forecasts and nowcasts using a mix of new nowcasting and forecasting tools, followed by a verification. Particular focus will be given to the use of MTG satellite data and products, from both FCI and LI sensors. In addition, a range of state-of-the-art nowcasting tools and numerical weather prediction-based guidance (i.e. from DWD, ZAMG, ESSL, and ECMWF) will be evaluated.

    Target group: Forecasters from the EUMETSAT Member States who train other forecasters and forecasters with a strong background in severe storms meteorology.

    All testbeds will take place at ESSL Research and Training Centre (Wiener Neustadt, Austria).

    Weekly schedule: Candidates need to come from EUMETSAT Member States and have a nomination by their home institution. For accepted candidates, EUMETSAT plans to sponsor the cost of testbed attendance and, upon request, the cost for travel, accommodation and subsistence.
