The active use of discussion forums provide tutors an up-to date idea of students’ progress and understanding of the course material. This means tutors can act and point students out in the right direction, avoiding those little misunderstandings causing larger damage in future topics and assessment results.

I agree with Lu. Discussion forums may provide a more "safe" environment for students to speak up if they are having misunderstandings or difficulties. And in the process of describing their problems, they may actually have an "aha" moment that clarifies their understanding. If not, they might learn from other students and the instructor in a more relaxed time outside the class schedule, which may be rather busy.
