CM SAF Online Event - 01 October 2013
On 1 October 2013 the EUMETSAT Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring (CM SAF) introduces their current acitivites focusing on the recently released CM SAF Clouds, Albedo and Radiation dataset from AVHRR (CLARA).
Participation in these sessions (each approx. 45 min) is free of charge, but interested parties are requested to register in advance.
Before the event you will be provided with two short test sessions in order to install the Sabameeting application on the PC and to make you familiar with its interface and features. The dates are as follows:
The test sessions will be identical, thus please ATTEND ONLY ONE of them. The same virtual meeting room will be used for the test session as for the actual event. Please use the meeting link and password which you have received in the confirmation email to access it. We would like to remind you to have the headset with microphone ready as we will use your PC (VoIP) for audio communication.

Presenter: Christine Träger-Chatterjee
8:00 UTC
This presentation provides a general overview on the data and service provided by CM SAF. It introduces the suite of available parameters provided by CM SAF, the difference between the climate data sets and the operational products, basic information on the data and how they are provided to the users.

Presenter: Karl-Göran Karlsson, Aku Riihelä
9:00 UTC
This presentation introduces the global CM SAF data set of cloud properties, surface albedo and short- and longwave surface radiation derived from observations of the AVHRR instruments (“CLARA”: CM SAF Clouds, Albedo and Radiation dataset from AVHRR data). The data is available globally from 1982 to 2009. Focus of this presentation is on the characteristics of the data set and on possible applications, in particular in the Arctic region.

Presenter: Jörg Trentmann
12:00 UTC
The CM SAF supports the use of software tools for the analysis of CM SAF data. The main software tools to analyse and visualize CM SAF data are the climate data operators (cdo) and the statistical package R. Both software packages are freely available for Windows, Unix, and MAC OS X operating systems. In this presentation, these tool are briefly introduced; example scripts of basic operations on CM SAF data are provided and explained.
